    1. Select multiple recipients
    2. Save this list of recipients (You could add the concept of distribution lists, as in email.)
    3. Save a list of common messages:
Then you could quickly update several people with a custom message or you could allow user to create pre-defined messages for common status tweeting / messaging scenarios (example: I'm going into a meeting now, Going to bed, Good Morning, What's your status?, etc)

Note this is actually 3 seperate features that could be implemented one at a time, but in thought of one another to build on the last step.

Drag and drop ordering (or the equivalent) is nice, and very explicit, but also some default sorts might make sense: 1. Recent (I think this is kinda how it currently sorted), 2. Unanswered, 3. Most Used, 4. Alphabetical, 5. Groups, 6. Custom
The sorts could be stacked; meaning, sort one way and then sub-sort by the 2nd way, and so on.
Pin and Close buttons, as well as a Hide (never show) button, would override the chosen sort.
The explicit drag and drop sort could be saved as various named Custom Sorts.
