I suggest you ...

Have the counter count down to when a message will be split into multiple messages (like twitter does)

this would allow a user to see right when the message will be split, so they can change wording as necessary. so instead of guessing when you've hit 160 characters, it would let you know.

        Definitely agree with the concept. I love how my Galaxy S3 does it--show the number of characters remaining per message. Start at 160/1 (160 characters remaining in the first message). For example, 33/2 would mean I have another 33 characters in my second message.

        I think another good option would be to allow us to make it count upwards to 160 (e.g 1/160) and then count how many messages it will come out to (e.g 1/160 [5]).

        Yeah! Multipart messages suck: they usually do not arrive simultaneously and display awkwardly on some phones.
